Innovations in Silk Production
Thompson insisted on conserving many traditional elements of cottage industry silk weaving but also introduced several innovations that significantly raised the standard of silk production. This resulted in a substantial improvement in the quality of the silk woven as well as in the volume produced.

To successfully break into the American and European markets, standardization was an important process. He introduced strict guidelines for silk production.

He persuaded the weavers to switch to a faster, foot-operated shuttle on their looms, significantly raising the daily production output.
